It’s Memorial Day weekend, one of motorsports’ biggest on the annual calendar.
For NASCAR, it means a trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway, where all four NASCAR series are in action.
The ARCA Menards Series will kick things off early Friday evening. Drivers in the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series will qualify Friday and race Friday night, with the Xfinity series to follow with qualifying and the BetMGM 300 on Saturday. The NASCAR Cup Series will qualify on Saturday, with the Coca-Cola 600 set to take the green flag on Sunday evening following the afternoon’s Indianapolis 500.
The Fox family of channels, as usual, will carry all the action.
Charlotte Motor Speedway (formerly known as Lowe’s Motor Speedway from 1999 to 2009) is a 1.500-mile (2.414 km) quad-oval intermediate speedway in Concord, North Carolina. It has hosted various major races since its inaugural season of racing in 1960, including NASCAR, IndyCar, and IMSA SportsCar Championship races.
The speedway has a capacity of 95,000 as of 2021, down from its peak of over 170,000 in the 1990s and 2000s. The track features numerous amenities, including a Speedway Club, condos, and a seven-story tower located on the complex for office space and souvenirs. The complex features numerous adjacent tracks, including a 1⁄5 mile (0.32 km) clay short track, a 2⁄5 mile (0.64 km) dirt track, and a 1⁄4 mile (0.40 km) long drag strip. The main track also features an infield road course that is used with the oval to make a “roval.”
Ryan Blaney enters as the Coca-Cola 600′s defending champ after starting eighth in 2023. There will be plenty of attention trained on Kyle Larson, who will try Sunday to become the fifth driver to run the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.
According to the National Weather Service forecast, there’s a 50 percent chance of showers and thundershowers Friday night and again Saturday and Sunday afternoon. It will feel like summer, with temperatures climbing into the high 80s.
