What is the float in stocks?
The term float refers to the regular shares a company has issued to the public that are available for investors to trade. This figure is derived by taking a company's outstanding shares and subtracting any restricted stock, which is stock that is under some sort of sales restriction.
This is the percentage of the total shares of stock available for trading. Each trader has their preferences, but most look for a percentage between 10% and 25%.

Calculating public float
For example, a company may have 10 million outstanding shares, with 3 million of them in a locked-in position; this company's float would be 7 million (multiplied by the share price).
A high float percentage indicates that a large proportion of a company's shares are available for trading, which can suggest greater liquidity and less price volatility. A low float percentage, on the other hand, can indicate higher volatility and potential price manipulation.
Short interest as a percentage of float above 10% is fairly high, indicating significant pessimistic sentiment. Short interest as a percentage of float above 20% is extremely high.
Stock float is particularly important for short-term trading. A low float company is likely to be much more volatile than a higher float company with the same market capitalization. The less publicly-traded stock there is on offer, the easier it is for the stock price to make outsized moves.

However, knowing how much petty cash to have in your float shouldn't be a difficult conclusion to come to, as daily experience will let you know what works and what doesn't. A general rule of thumb says that for smaller businesses, about $150 of petty cash should suffice, and larger businesses may need up to $400.
