The “Free City” is located in the Austrian province of Burgenland on the western shore of the famous Lake Neusiedlersee, one of the few steppe (endorheic)lakes in Europe. With its approximately 1,900 inhabitants, the municipality of Rust is the smallest administrative district in Austria. In the neighborhood are, among others, such famous communities as St. Margarethen or Mörbisch am See.

The small town is extremely centrally located: the Hungarian border is just nearby, the capital of Burgenland, Eisenstadt, is only 15 km away, and the federal capital, Vienna, can be reached by car in just one hour.

In 2001, the Old Town of Rust, together with the Lake Neusiedlersee region, was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The old town of the Free City of Rust is protected as a historic monument, the historic charm with its numerous town houses from the 16th to the 19th century is thus preserved. Characteristic round-arched portals and vaulted entrances lead into idyllic courtyards or to the even older courtyard tracts with covered staircases and arcades, some of which also contain remnants of the town wall.

The Kunsthaus Rust is a listed vintner's house in which today a permanent exhibition as well as changing exhibitions of Austrian and international contemporary art are shown. Tip: The romantic courtyard garden invites you to linger over a glass of wine.

The Roman Catholic parish church of Rust am See is an early Baroque building and a must for architecture lovers. Those who dare to climb the tower will also be rewarded with a wonderful view. The history is also exciting: the church was originally consecrated as a Protestant church and was rededicated as a Catholic church in the course of the Counter-Reformation.

In numerous wine cellars (a good tip especially when it rains), wine taverns, and wine bars, guests can taste the exceptional quality of the wines, and above all of the passionately lived wine culture in Rust.

Tip: You should definitely try the "Ruster Ausbruch", one of the best sweet wines in the world, as it is otherwise only produced in Europe in the Hungarian Tokaj or the French Sauternes.
